The purpose of this medical equipment is to deliver a special solution, called cardoplegia, to the heart to keep it alive during open heart surgery. There were a number of Human Factors considerations in the design of this control panel. The control panel for this equipment contains a number of functions integrated within a graphically oriented design. A graphic flowline portrays the cardiplegia solution flow from the pump through the heat exchanger, through the insertion of additives and on into a graphic of the heart. Andy LeCocq recieved a patent for his design of this control panel. (US Patent No. 5,573,502 Display panel and controls for Blood Mixture Delivery System.) A Technical Article in the Canadian Perfusion Canadienne, Vol 8, No3, March 1996 was written regarding this control panel design.
